Autum splendor in Bensenville Illinois. October 2006.

Hi everyone!

Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page from the city of Chicago Illinois.

A very popular and colorful season of the year enjoyed by many people through out the greater Chicagoland area, is Autum. Unless of course....You look at Autum from a "Leaf Rakers Point of View".

I photographed this lovely Autum image back in October of 2006, in lovely and very scenic Bensenville Illinois.

I took this photo way back in October of 1983.

Seen here during it's last week in operation, is the 1914 built Grand Trunk Western Railroad locomotive steam era roundhouse that was located at approximately West 49th Street on South Kedzie Avenue, in Chicago's Elsdon neighborhood.

This enginehouse, serviced the GTW locomotives that worked from Elsdon Yard, and was often refered to as the "Elsdon Roundhouse".
In the year of 1983, the GTW decided to close the now outdated Elsdon Yard and locomotive roundhouse.

The GTW Elsdon roundhouse, was finally demolished in late 1987, and replaced with a small to medium sized retail strip mall.

Autum on Chicago's Lakeshore Drive. Chicago Illinois USA. October 2006.

Hello everyone!

Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page from the city of Chicago Illinois.

A popular roadway in Chicago, that was mentioned in an early 1970's era hit songs, is noneother than Chicago's very own Lakeshore Drive.

I took this photo while driving south late in the day, during October of 2006. The Autum foliage even looks lovely along this popular Chicago roadway along the lakefront.

Yes, I was very careful when I snapped this quick photo in traffic.

Thanks.

Reflections of the Chicago, South Shore And South Bend Railroad. Michigan City Indiana. August 1984.

I took this photo at the Chicago, South Shore and South Bend Railroad's own storefront station, in downtown Michigan City Indiana way back in August of 1984.

The station was still open at the time of My visit, and the windows weren't boarded up just yet. The reflection of the "New" 1980's era lightweight multiple unit cars in the windows, helped make for a very unique and artistic photograph.

I took this photo during My recent September 2010 visit to The Hesston Steam Museum in northwstern Indiana. www.hesston.org

One sight many visiting people don't pay any mind to, but the operating crew members aboard the steam train do all the time...are the many details one finds up close on top of the steam locomotive's fuel tender.

Seen here up close are the Coal Bunker, The retrieving coal rake, the back up headlight for reverse movements, and the water tank hatch.

These are all functioning items needed for reliable and safe operation of the museum's steam trains.

Eddie K hosting the event entitled "Chicago Streetcar Memories" at TheNiles Historical Society and Museum. Niles Illinois USA. Sunday,October 24th, 2010.

Hi everyone!
Welcome aboard Eddie's Railfan Page from the city of Chicago Illinois.

This past Sunday, I had the distinct honor and privelidge of hosting My biggest public photo slideshow event yet. Just recently, approximately a little less than two months ago....I was approached via the internet by a gentlemen named Michael A. Crisci who is an Administrative Aid at The Niles Historical Society and Museum.

Michael Crisci had discovered Me through My links page "Roger's Basement" to the right of Your computer screen, after I had sent an E-Mail posting on their community message board explaining why I hadn't written in nearly three years, and that I was now hosting public speaking / railfan photo slideshow events at some of the local suburban public librairies in the greater Chicagoland area.

The Niles Historical Society and Museum located at 8970 North Milwaukee Avenue in northwest suburban Niles Illinois, was actually looking for speakers and presenters for their upcoming programs.
Heck! I jumped at the opportunity in a heartbeat!

My show event entitled "Chicago Streetcar Memories", had brought out a good 35 to 40 people to the museum that afternoon. Many of them were Senior Chicagoans who actually rode the electric streetcars back in the day. They absolutely loved My musical photo slideshow set to authentic historical period music from -The Glen Miller Orchestra, Tommy Dorsey and Artie Shaw. I even tossed in a little Scott Joplin "Ragtime" piano selection and some Dixieland Jazz too.

The best part was hearing the many happy memories and actual "First Hand" accounts of how this was all like in Chicago many years ago.

At the end of the show, I recieved many handshakes and congratulations from the happy visiting guests, as well as a few "Yet to materialize" offers for doing more public speaking slideshow appearances in the near future.

I wish to extend a very special "Thank You" from the bottom of My heart, to Mr Michael A. Crisci and Marge Berles the museum's curator who helped make this wonderful event possible.

Thank You everyone!
This was absolutely great!

My presentaion on Sunday, October 24th, 2010 was a huge success.
Many people came up to Me to shake hands and extend their congratulations for a show well done at the end of My show.

Many poistive things are currently developing largely due to the exposure given to Me courtesy of the Niles Historical Society and Museum, and the work I am doing locally as a presenter, historian and public speaker.

The old Cock Robin Ice Cream Shop. Brookfield Illinois. October 2007. (Closed.)

One place that brought Me many happy memories growing up in the greater Chicagoland area, was the old Cock Robin ice cream shop in west suburban Brookfield Illinois.

Many happy summertime memories took place here both with My family as a kid, and later years as a young adult whenever I had a taste for some good ice cream when I was in the area, I even took My Wife here when We were just dating and later engaged. This place even served hamburgers as well.

Unfortunately, this place closed for good in 2007. I believe that this may have beeen the last Cock Robin ice cream stand in operation, as there were once several of these around the greater Chicagoland area.

Hi everyone!

This is Eddie K, Your host and photographer here at Eddie's Railfan Page. Coming to You from the city of Chicago Illinois USA.

Being a lifelong Chicago railfan born in 1962 from the near southwest side of Chicago, one of My childhood memories were seeing the early Amtrak trains passing through town.

In the year of 1970, The now late United States President Richard M. Nixon signed in to law, The National Rail Passenger Service Act. Begining during the mid to late 1950's, the individual railroads who had operated their own passenger trains from the begining, had been gradually phasing them out or greatly reducing their passenger operations. America was in danger of eventually losing all of the long distance, regional and intercity passenger trains all together.

Amtrak began operations on May 1st, 1971. I especially remember how the early Amtrak trains during the first few years of operation, were a mix of second hand equipment and color schemes from several railroads. This was known as Amtrak's "Rainbow Era".

I remember how much I had hated seeing this "Hodge Podge" arrangement of color schemes as a kid, but somehow ended up incorporating an H.O Scale rainbow era Amtrak train during the 1980's on one of My model railroads using Athearn and Con Cor equipment.

Happy memorys today.

Eddie K.

The preserved Chicago Great Western RR passenger station from Elmhurst illinois. October 2006.

I took this photo one night back in October of 2006.

A little known piece of local historical railroad preservation in the greater Chicagoland area, is this quaint wooden small town passenger train station from the former Chicago Great Western Railroad.

It is located in a city park just east of the intersection of York and Valette Streets, in west suburban Elmhurst Illinois.

Southbound CSX Transportation intermodal transfer train passing through Brighton Junction. ( Gone, Rebuilt.) Chicago Illinois. October 2006.

I took this photo on an overcast Autum morning back in October of 2007.

My of My personal favorites among on location railfan haunts known as Brighton Junction, was in it's last Autum as an operating steam era manual interlocking railroad junction on the southside of Chicago.

The operator had just raised the mechanical Semaphore signal arm a few minutes before. Soon, this large CSX transporation Company double stack container train was passing through the junction.

The Canadian National Railroad closed this junction in early July of 2007, replacing the old crosstracks with new ones, and removing the classic but very outdated steam era Semaphore signals and stop signs.

Today, this junction is fully automated with tall overhead signal bridges and remotely controlled block target signals.

Brighton Junction, located near the intersection of South Archer and Western Avenues, for Myself was a fun place to visit at the border of Chicago's Brighton Park and Mc Kinley Park neighborhoods.

On My lunch break this morning, I stopped in to shop at Des Plaines Hobbies on Lee Street in northwest suburban Des Plaines Illinois.

This news story, appears on Page 24 of the November 2010 issue of Railfan and Railroad, published by Carstens Publishing Comapny www.railfan.com

Well folks, after operating at a major financial loss, the Central Illinois Railroad has decided to pull out of the Windy City. It makes Me sad, because back on Friday, October 31st, 2008....they had an "Open House" public relations event I had attended with several local railfan photographers. At the event, Former Belt Railway of Chicago EMD SW 1200 yard switcher # 2006, made Her debut wearing a fresh 1950's era
Chicago, Burlington & Quincy "Heritage" color scheme. I took several photos and videos that day. It is also the day I finally had the honor of meeting fellow Chicago area railfan Franklin Campbell amongst the assembled photographers.

Frank was a big fan of this railroad and had taken many photos at His own Flickr page. Oh well. I guess it was nice while it had lasted anyway. Times are tough these days economically here in Chicago Illinois.

The former Burlington Northern "Lumberyard District" branchline in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood where the Central Illinois Railroad operated, has been returned to the lines owner the BNSF Railway, who will be resuming switching operations.
Coming soon to The Elmwood Park Public Library!

I took this photo during a recent September 2010 visit to The Chicago Botanic Garden in north suburban Glencoe Illinois.

The former Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, had a major prescence in Chicago many years ago. Their famous blue and gray passenger trains were a regular sight on the southside of Chicago during pre Amtrak times prior to 1971.

Seen here, is a miniature G Scale rendition of what could possibly be, the B & O Capitol Limited passenger train passing through one of the gardens. The outdoor G Scale model railroad exhibit, is a big hit with both Young and Old here at the Chicago Botanic Garden.
