Grand Trunk Western Railroad EMD SW 1200 # 1512 at the GTW Elsdon Yardlocomotive terminal. Chicago Illinois. 1970.

I found this wonderful black and white photograph from the former Grand Trunk Western Railroad at my link page Fallen Flags.Org, which is located to the right of your computer screen at www.rr-fallenflags.org

I was only 8 years old, when railfan photographer Dennis Schmidt took this photograph at the Grand Trunk Western Railroad's Elsdon Yard locomotive termonial just west of South Kedzie Avenue at approximately West 49th Street.

Although the GTW had switched from their 1950's era olive green and gold color scheme to a black with red ends and white frame stripe color scheme by 1961, several GTW locomotives had not yet been repainted by the time of this 1970 photograph. At this late date, GTW EMD SW 1200 yard switcher locomotive # 1512, was still idling on the ready tracks wearing the 1950's era olive green and gold colors in to the early 1970's.

The Grand Trunk Western closed Elsdon Yard and the locomotive roundhouse in October of 1983. Today this is the site of an outdoor retail strip mall in Chicago's Elsdon neighborhood.

Thanks.
Eddie K.
